I really ought to read some current crime fiction, but I find the historical distance helpful in sorting out the shape and form of the work without being distracted by the contemporary stuff. I really felt that both Zoo City and The City & The City were very weak in their crime plots - I'd determined to do better than that! But it's early days... still trying to etablish the initial conditions before setting things in motion.

I also have a collection of Dashiell Hammet short stories (also picked up at the Amnesty Sale for 50p) which I'll get to eventually - suffering a bit from pile overload at the mo.

This week's crossword down to the last clue: Nick, about to lose control, doing a U turn.

It's is exactly that horrible itchy mystery feeling that I love and hate so much!Patrick Hudsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08483247439912550014noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7456818260601216123.post-57808688213336346252011-07-12T04:32:24.696+01:002011-07-12T04:32:24.696+01:00I'm a big fan of The Thin Man. I also have not seen the film(s).

"These days I like to do the crossword in the Private Eye – I particularly enjoy the way that some of the clues are also topical (and often smutty) jokes."
I like it when the Eye crossword turns the smut around on you, too - that is, the clue tricks you into thinking the answer is going to be something rude, but in fact is quite innocuous.TMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12380944119153438285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7456818260601216123.post-78447761443743448942011-07-11T23:47:12.037+01:002011-07-11T23:47:12.037+01:00Interesting stuff. One day I'm going to get around to writing my Ancient Greek Detective Story That Overturns The Cliches Of Ancient Detective Stories, so I'll follow this with interest.

At the moment I'm reading David Simon's non-fiction "Homicide: A year on the killing streets", which I'd recommend for all sorts of reasons.Stephenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03185607466557136654noreply@blogger.com
